Pregnancy Diet Information
PregnancyDiet Information
When you are pregnant, a little being is forming inside of you. This little being is completely dependent on your body and what you take in to make itself, and create a healthy start in life. It is easy to see from this perspective, why pregnancy diet information is essential to having a healthy, happy baby. Mothers to be are renowned for having strange cravings.
These may have to do with essential nutrients that the baby’s system is lacking, or they may be an artifact of the changes pregnancy creates in the mother’s body. Either way, indulging them is not usually harmful in moderation, unless they are on the forbidden foods list. In general, a healthy diet when you are not pregnant is also a healthy way to eat when you are. There are some things to be aware of and pay special attention to, but the advice given to non-pregnant persons to eat whole grains,
low amounts of saturated fats and processed foods, and lots of different fruits and vegetables still applies. Getting plenty of vitamins and minerals, such as iron and calcium, are especially important when you are pregnant. These are building blocks for the baby’s blood and bones, and are essential for proper development. Iron can be found in red meat, and calcium is usually found in dairy products and calcium-fortified foods. Taking prenatal vitamins is important even if you think you are eating well. They can serve as a backup, just in case you aren’t getting something in sufficient quantities from your food.
The combination of eating well and taking your vitamins should ensure that your baby gets the best possible start in life. There are a few foods to avoid while you are pregnant. Unpasteurized dairy should be avoided
because certain bacteria that are usually harmless to adults can harm infants. Alcohol (in any quantity) and caffeine (in excess) should be avoided. The artificial sweetener saccharine and certain fish such as shark and white snapper should be avoided because of the ability to cross the placenta and high mercury levels, respectively. It is both common and normal for pregnant women to find that their desire for certain foods waxes and wanes during their pregnancy. If this does not interfere with eating properly, you can simply avoid the foods that seem unappealing and eat more of the healthy ones you crave. More pregnancy diet information can be obtained from your doctor, if you have questions.
